The International Mathematics Olympiad begins. 615 of the world's best young mathematicians will be present in Cluj
Cluj-Napoca hosts the International Mathematical Olympiad 2018 (IMO 2018) from July 3-14, 2018. There will be 615 contestants from 114 countries around the world.
At its 59th edition, the International Mathematics Olympiad will return to Romania in 2018. Cluj-Napoca organizes this year's 6th Romanian edition of the contest initiated in 1959 in Brasov and today became the largest competition in the field of exact sciences that will bring together from July 3, 2018, 114 countries of the world and 615 contestants, 263 leaders, deputy leaders and observers, about 900 foreign guests, over 300 volunteers and about 100 people involved in day-to-day organization, according to a press release from the County School Inspectorate .
Romania and Bulgaria, the only countries in the world
Starting in 2013, Romania presented to the International Olympics jury the intention to organize for the 6th time the competition in Romania, given the importance of 2018 for the history of Romania, the year of the Centenary. Honorary President of the Olympiad is academician Viorel Barbu, professor at Cluj-Napoca, president of the Romanian Academy's Mathematics Department and member of the first team of Romania at the first edition of the 1959 Olympics in Brasov. Romania and Bulgaria are the sure countries of the world who have participated without interruption at every edition of the International Mathematics Olympics. Leaders, delegation leaders are part of the IMO jury, those who decide on the issues that the pupils will receive in the Olympics. They will meet in more than 10 jury meetings, and then, after discussion and vote in plenary, they will settle the 6 competition issues and then translate them into the language of the respective country.
6 Problems
The 6 issues, three for each day, are chosen by international experts from a set of issues and are published in a confidential booklet. Deputy leaders, accompanying competitors respond to potential questions prior to the contest and usually participate in the evaluation of the competitors' papers and in finalizing the final note together with the Romanian experts. 108 leaders and so many deputy leaders from all participating countries are expected to arrive in Cluj-Napoca starting July 3, 2018.
Official Opening - 7 July
IMO 2018 volunteers will wait for all delegations to the airport to head to the accommodation . The official date of arrival of the contestants is Saturday, July 7, 2018, and the Official Opening of the Olympics will take place on Sunday, July 8, 2018, at the Polyvalent Hall in Cluj-Napoca. Entry is only allowed to those involved in the event, based on accreditation. The broad public will be able to watch live festivals, TVR Cluj, the co-producer of the Olympics, TVR 3 and TVR International as well as other partner TV channels. "The award of this event to Cluj is a recognition of the performance of the Cluj School, of the correct and efficient interinstitutional collaboration and the climate that in Cluj-Napoca allows to attract the private environment into the major projects of education. We thank everyone for our involvement and we are convinced that our combined efforts will make the 6th Romanian edition of the International Mathematics Olympics a reference educational event at the level of the scientific competition as a testimony to the strengthening of the role of education in Cluj-Napoca " , says Valentin Claudiu Cuibus, general school inspector of I.Ş.J.
