Increased SAFETY measures at the Mathematics Olympics in Cluj. 140 gendarmes and police officers at the exams of Syrian President's son
80 gendarmes, 60 policemen and 6 ISU crews will ensure public order measures at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Cluj-Napoca, to which the son of the President of Syria comes. "He will participate (Hafez al - Assad - n.r.) in activities just like other children," says the head of ISJ Cluj.
More than 600 competing students, aged between 13 and 19, from 110 countries, participate in the International Mathematics Olympics in Cluj-Napoca, which has a budget of one million euros, according to the MEDIAFAX correspondent.
ISJ Cluj head Valentin Cuibus, general manager of the International Mathematics Olympics, told a press conference on Tuesday that the opening of the event will take place on July 8, and the actual competition is scheduled on the 9th and 10th July.

"The organization of the 59th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Cluj-Napoca is a great challenge, given that the previous Olympiad was in Rio de Janeiro and that next year will be organized by London. The Olympics is attended by 615 competing students from 110 countries aged 13-19, four other observers, plus hundreds of people who will be leaders of national teams, deputy leaders, observers, volunteers. The budget of the International Mathematics Olympiad is one million euros, the funds being provided by the Ministry of National Education, Cluj County Council, Cluj-Napoca Local Council and sponsorships. Participants have already begun to arrive, preparations are under way, competition issues will be selected, the opening of the event will take place on July 8, and the competition is scheduled on July 9 and 10 in the Polivalent Hall, "Cuibus said.
According to him, after the contest, the participants will visit the Salda Turda and the Alba Carolina fortress in Alba Iulia.
The head of the ISJ Cluj confirmed the presence at the Olympics of Hafez Assad, the great son of the President of Syria, Bashar al Assad, who is a member of the Syrian Olympic Mathematics Lot.
"He also participated in the International Mathematics Olympics in Rio de Janeiro last year. Special security measures will not be taken in his case, but he will participate exactly like other children on the measures established under international regulations, "Valentin Cuibus said.
The chairman of the IMO 2018 Scientific Organization Committee, Radu Gologan, stated in his turn that from the point of view of mathematics, all the important mathematicians of Romania who have learned abroad have helped Romanian mathematics in recent years.
"Statistics show that in the last 20 years, out of the six pupils belonging to the national group, four went to study abroad and two remained to study in Romania, and then both of them left to study abroad do doctorate in other countries. The head of the Cluj-Napoca Gendarmerie Group, Sebastian Cliţan, said at the same press conference that public order measures during the Olympics will be ensured by 80 gendarmes, 60 policemen and 6 ISU crews.
"The necessary measures will be taken to ensure public order in the places of accommodation of the delegations from the 114 participating countries, at the places where the activities are carried out, as well as during the transport of the delegations from the hotels in the Olympics area. In order to ensure the safety and protection of the participants, important staffs will be mobilized within the Group and will benefit from the support of some structures belonging to the Special Gangster Intervention Brigade in Bucharest, "Cliţan said.
At the opening of the IMO 2018, President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, and several ambassadors are expected to attend.
The First International Olympiad in Mathematics was organized in 1959 in Romania, in Brasov.
